Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that affect SpanOf Control (SaC) of the construction foreman, and to investigate howthese factors affect SOC. Labor conditions is one of the most importantfactors that has a great effect on the construction project management.Labor is also one of the most important factors that affects the levelof inaccuracy of the cost estimate, the project plan, duration, schedule, and actual cost. Labor is one of resources that must be managed perfectly, because it has a great impact on the project progress. The results of this study are the factors affecting sac and theimpact of those factors on SOC. Increasing or decreasing sac must bedone considering those factors as constraints of tile sizing of sac todetermine the number of subordinates that would not diminish the controleffectiveness of the construction foreman and on the other hand to havehigh productivity, to minimize the activity cost and duration.Data regarding the various factors affecting the foreman SOC wereobtained in interviews with foremen in different projects. The factors onwhich questions were to be based were culled from the literature, besidethe addition of four factors by the author. In studying of the effect of thefactors affecting the foreman SOC, all the factors will be assumed to beconstant, except for the factor whose effect on SOC is studied, todetermine the effect of this factor only.In this study, interviews of foremen in an advanced sites were used, these sites have a progressive quality of management (e.g., operating inan environment of advanced management information, formal planningand control practices). A foreman answered the questions depending onhis previous experience, not depending on his current project only. sac ofthis foreman may be a number of subordinates, or a number of groups ofsubordinates (i.e., crews). The statistical analysis performed on the collected data is theCorrelation analysis that is more concerned with the nature of therelationship between the two variables of the study that are the size ofsac and each of the factors affect SOC. The correlation analysis is alsoconcerned with the strength of the relationship between the two variables.
