Abstract:
The main aim of this thesis is to examine the behavior ofnon collinear coupled shear walls under lateral loads. Thestudy first develops and tests methods that are suitable foruse in the analysis of non collinear coupled shear walls. Asolution based on the The stiffness method is presented andverified for using in analyzing such an irregular system. Theprocedure depends on the implementation of a geometrictransformation matrix specifically formulated for the case ofnon collinear coupled shear walls. It includes coordinatetransformations, wall width, and stiffness coefficients. Thecontinuous method is also formulated to obtain the forces anddisplacements of walls taking into account the inclinationangles of beam and wall piers.To verify the results of the proposed methods, the finiteelement method is used. A suitable mesh is prepared and athree dimensional element type is used. The proposedprocedures verify to be accurate and efficient in analyzingsuch cases. To use standard structural analysis computerprograms in solving such case, the frame analogy methodconsidering the wall width as rigid arm is also evaluated.A parametric study is performed to illustrate the effectof inclination of wall piers and connecting beam on forces anddisplacements of the wall system. The parametric studyincludes the effect of inclination of wall piers andconnecting beam on lateral deflection and slope angle toinvestigate the wall stiffness. Shear in connecting beam andmoments in wall piers are also studied. A study of theconnecting beam torque which can take place only in the caseof non collinear coupled shear walls is also included .. Basedon the obtained results, design considerations are discussedto help the designer engineer to make good estimation offorces and displacements of such walls through simple analysisprocedures.
