Abstract:
- Research effort has been expanded during the ?ast fewyears into the response of structures to dynamic loadingbecause of the damage of many important structures such asdams, life-lines, tall buildings and bridges by recentearthquakes. Due to the complex nature of the problem ofearthquake response of soil-structure systems, numericalprocedures are introduced to solve the different problems. The aim of this research is to provide a new numericalmodel for the soil structure interaction based on co~pledfinite and infinite elements taking into account the nonlinearperformance of soil. A new type of infinite element isintroduced for this research. This model is used to study thedynamic behavior of tunnels under a real recorded earthquakeexcitati0n. A sophisticated computer program is developedduring the course of this study to carry out the numericalanalysis of the considered model. A parametric studv isapplied on a circular tunnel which has the same diameter andcross section of the Cairo tunnel (line 11).Finally/experimental work based on thetechnique is carried out to solve a soil-tunnelvertical ~armonic loads.photo-elasticmodel under
