Abstract:
Deep tunnel construction is considered as one of thelargest projects in which high level of experience, hightechnological instrumental equipments and enormous quantitiesof materials are required. ”Ameria tunnel pumping station”which is a part of ”The Greater Cairo Waste Water Project” isone of these projects. It is a cylinderical reinforcedconcrete shaft of 45 m in diameter and 35 m in depth with 2.5mwall thickness. The suggested methods of constructing thisproject type wer,e sheet piling, compressed air, groundfreezing, open-caisson, and diaphragm wall methods. Accordingto the ground and environmental conditions and tunnel designfeature, open-caisson and diaphragm wall methods are chosenas the most suitable methods for constructing this project.Economic evaluation of these alternatives is the mostimportant factor in selecting the favourable constructionmethod. This study has evaluated economically these twoalternatives by estimating the project cost and the predictedrevenue and calculating, the net present value of the projectcash flow for these two methods. Finally this study hasproved that diaphragm wall method is the most economicalternative to construct Ameria tunnel pumping stationcost data for this analysis have been collected fromrelevant resources such as material suppliers, equipmentspurChasing orders and site engineers interviews.
