Abstract:
The thesis presents an experimental investigation ofthe effects of an additional electric or magnetic field in thetransverse direction to the main applied electric field, onthe breakdown characteristics of dielectric liquids andsolids, under non-uniform fields, using direct andalternating voltages. In the present study, the author tries to introduce anew methodology technique, to improve the withstandability of the dielectric medium by the effect of anadditional electric or magnetic field in the transversedirection to the main applied electric field.Experimental tests presented in this thesis have beendivided into two parts : part I deals with breakdown testsunder existing transverse electric field, and part Il dealswith breakdown tests under existing transverse magneticfield. Each of the above two parts contain two sections: oneof which is devoted to tests on dielectic liquids, and theother is devoted to the tests on solid dielectrics. In the present work the author deviced a newexperimental technique in order to measure the influence ofapplying transverse electric or magnetic field, to the maintested gap, on the breakdown voltage, induced electricpressure, and leakage current of dielectic liquids and solids, under noo- uniform fields, using direct and alternatingvoltages.Experiments were made on both dielectric liquids andsolids. Liquid samples used were transformer oil, cable oil, silicone oil and carbon tetrachloride oil. Solid samples usedwere Protolin 51 cast resin and joint box compound G 123 .
