Abstract:
Seismic evaluation and retrofitting of existing structures areundoubtedly of most important. Too many buildings in Egypt and allover. the world were built using previous codes with no consideration ofearthquake forces. Evaluating the seismic vulnerability of such buildingsis thus very necessary to determine their earthquake resistance capacity. For buildings having insufficient seismic resistance, a decision aboutrehabilitation is to be made to mitigate seismic hazards and save livesduring future earthquakes. Deriving more evaluation procedures forseismic evaluation of buildings and developing policies for selecting themost suitable method of upgrading are thus major challenges. The present study suggests a complete, robust and integratedprocedure for seismic analysis, evaluation and retrofitting of reinforcedconcrete frame buildings. The proposed procedure is based on detailedstress analysis and full description of the building. Both safety and driftview points are considered in the evaluation in addition to checkingconstruction detailing and foundation safety. Conventional methods ofretrofitting as individual member strengthening, using infill walls andinstalling steel braces are discussed and new trends as base isolation andusing energy absorption techniques are also demonstrated.A computer program along with two knowledge based expertsystems are developed to incorporate the proposed procedure byperforming static analysis, spectral analysis or time history analysisbased on space structural model. Soil structure interaction is included in
