Abstract:
The aim of this research is to, experimentally, investigate the evaporation of liquids from a partiallyfilled open topped cylindrical container in a turbulent airstream at different air flow parameters, such as streamspecific humidity and Reynolds number, at varying liquidheights in the container. Both water and toluene are used forpurposes of comparison to indicate the evaporation rates andthe effect of container top edge protrusion in the duct is~lso investigated. Results , of the lnvestigation indicated thai:1- The location of the point of maximum mass transfer in therelation (Sh)-(H/D) depends on the specific humidity of thecarrying air stream (w).At flow Reynolds numbers Re = 89000and 144000 the maximum evaporation rate of water turns tooccur at a depth ratio (H/D) equals 0.23,0.27 and 0.345 forspecific humidities of 0.0159,0.0137 and 0.009 kg w.v/kg d.arespectively.2- Both water and toluene display the same local value ofSherwood number (Sh) when evaporation investigated at a depthratio (HID) equals 0.345, at the same Reynolds number (Re)37,700 and specific humidity (w) 0.009 kg w.v/kg d.a.3- The effect of the protruding edge of the container on theevaporation process appears to have a significantly enhancingeffect on the Sherwood number. An increase in the maximum
