Abstract:
Maintenance of our pavement network is a vital task in order to ensure that people and goods are transported in a safe, comfortable, fast and economic way. Furthermore, insufficient maintenance will result at the end of the day into the need for heavy and costly maintenance treatments. Sincethe resources available to maintain road networks are limited careful monitoring, planning, and optimization of maintenance strategies should be considered. Large investment are spent every year for the maintenance treatment of the road network are spent every year. Therefore, essentialto spend these resources in an optimal way. To achieve this the condition of the road network should be known. Furthermore, it is important to predict the time and the location at whichmaintenance should take place. Pavement condition have to be collected, processed and analysed.Because a very large amount of information gathered from road network, therefore the use of the computer is necessary. The study was limited to Suez Canal and Sinai’ road network.Goals: (I) Develop maintenance management strategy for Egypt’s road network for a certain period of time up to 20 years based on :(i) Norm planning, which minimizes costs while maintaining an acceptable quality level;(ii) Budget planning, which maximizes quality within an available budget.(2) Developing a performance curve which can be used to define the required maintenance activities and the cost associated for any segment in the network. The results of the study imply that: The pavement maintenance management system basically consists of Road inventory; Road condition data; A planning and optimization procedure;Execution of maintenance plans. The results are based on treating visual condition sections (1124 sections) as a maintenance section. VIA VIEW is a user - friendly software written in Turbo-Pascal. It specially designed to be used at network level by (technical) pavement managers.Differences in road conditions (Defined by traffic load for example) can be input in VIA VIEWby means of assigning different road categories. VIA VIEW offers possibilities to take intoaccount specific conditions (e.g. the size of the area, climate conditions and material characteristics). The treatment proposal which VIA VIEW calculates serves the following:-Highlight the attention to provide the decision makers with the high damaged pavement sections;-Provide a base to calculate the overall budget requirements, for which each individual proposal need.
