Abstract:
One of the most significant causes of poor productivity In construction industry is management ineffectiveness. Many authorsand researchers have attempt to stress on this fact, to clarify thecauses and effects of poor management on productivity, and todevelop models to remedy these shortfalls. This study focuses on the evaluation of the effectiveness ofon-site management so as to locate the shortcomings in theperforming of on-site management functions. A study of a selectedgroup of building, engineering and industrial construction projectsin Egypt was performed in order to determine the actual on-sitemanagement functions and responsibilities being practiced. The study was conducted through in-depth interviewscompleted by the researcher with the site personnel ranging fromprojects managers to craftsmen of eleven construction projects- 15studied cases- in the sample. The actual situation for each studiedcase was charted and then compared with an idealized on-sitemanagement and control system developed in a previous study. Themajor trends disclosed from the study were displayed. Also acomparative analysis was made between the actual on-sitemanagement functions and responsibilities being practiced and theidealized model. from this comparative analysis the shortcomingsof the on-site management were determined and the correctiveactions were recommended.
