Abstract:
Steady state stability becomes a topic of vital importance after therapid expansion of electric power systems throughout the Kingdom. The importance of stability is increasing day by day wheninterconnections are being completed between different electricnetworks which are forming the backbone of a national grid. Furthercomplex system will arise when the national electric grid systemwill be extended to incorporate those of GCC countries in future. Both SCECO-C and SCECO-E have complex systems of electricpower generations and supply networks. Recently AI Qurayyahpower plant has been incorporated into SCECO-E network as wellas Qassim into SCECO-C network via transmission tie-lines.Moreover, SCECO-C has been interconnected with SCECO-E via230kV & 380kV double-circuit tie-lines. Consequently SCECO-C(including Qassim) and SCECO-E (including AI Qurayyah) form anintegrated power system of greater dimensions. One of the important objectives of this study is to develop thesteady state stability simulation program for this greater integratedelectric power system. A data bank has been established on thebasis of information regarding generating stations, transmissionlines, loads, etc. available from both the utilities. These data andparameters are the essential components in determining the responseof the integrated system under certain system conditions.Eigenvalue techniques have been utilized to analyze the steady statestability of the integrated power system. Steady state stabilityevaluation for the interconnected system has been carried out underpeak load condition. Ghazlan power plant was found to be unstableunder such circumstances .So enhancement of steady state stability was required in this study. In order to achieve these, first the excitation parameters have beenvaried. At certain values of these parameters, a very limitedenhancement of stability has been achieved; but the system has beenstabilized.
