Abstract:
The present study deals with the problem or the optimum elasticdesign of the pitched roof frames and portal frames. The optimumsolution for the rectangular hall has been investigated. An iterative method which uses Taylors First order SeriesExpansion to express the various required constraints is employed. Thefunction or the problem is linear in the design variables, which enable theSimplex Linear Programming Algorithm to be used to solve the Problem.Tlle displacement method is used to analyse the structure. Anefficient solution technique for the spare stiffness matrix is developed.Fortran IV computer programmes, with an overlay technique, whichhave been used to save computer time, are presented. The design charts for rectangular hall ~L ms, covered with eitherpitched roof or portal frames with different spans, spacing, and slopes, have been prepared. The design problem determines the optimum cross-sectional area ofthe various members of the structure. When considering the safety of astructure, both stress and deflection limitations are taken intoconsideration. Finally, the problem of the optimum elastic design of the structureis of great importance for design engineers because of its economy.
