SUMMARYRadon comes from the natural decay of radium and uranium found in the soil, the houses and from the raw materials used. The amount of radon in the soil depends on complex soil chemistry that varies from one area to the other. Indoor radon comes from severIn recent years, estimation of radon emanation rate from Egyptian raw materials are very important in the assessment of possible radiological hazards to human health .Many techniques are used for measurements such as solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD’s) which called passive technique and electronic devices which called active technique.In this thesis, the radon emanation rates from thirteen raw Egyptian materials using the passive technique (sealed cup-technique equipped with CR-39 and LR-115 detectors) and the active technique (Alpha-Guard monitor ) were investigated. The calibration cChapter one is an introduction and a literature review in the field of radon measurements using passive and active techniques . It also contains the aim of this work .Chapter two deals with the interaction of heavy charged particles with the matter and with SSNTD’s, their use in radon measurement , the track forming criteria and track processing methods.Chapter three Includes the characteristics and the component of Alpha-Guard monitor and Alpha- Pump . It also contains the uses of this device to measure radon concentration .Chapter four presents detailed description of the experimental procedures. It contains the characteristics of LR-115 and CR-39 detectors, determination of the bulk etching rate under the optimum etching conditions and the response function of CR-39.
